The BeowolfSA Philosophy
My training philosophy comes from many years in different fields through many schools of fitness, all whilst being an athlete. From being an aesthetic gym bunny to an OCR athlete.
To delve into it a little:
I spent my young adulthood inside conventional gyms, building mass and cutting it down. This, as I now know, is a typical but stupid thing to do as a laaitjie. See, the body in your late teens - early 20's is built for athletic performance, not isolation training for size. The older you get, the easier it becomes to put on weight (depending on diet, eating times and individual variances), but in your youth you should be engaging in more athletic forms of fitness (running, soccer, rugby, tennis, calisthenics and even crossfit). From this I ended up damaging my body. When you train muscle size individually and take protein shakes and bcaa's and so on, you put strain on the connective tissue. If you don't address this imbalance, your ligaments tear and so it goes on like this.
I developed lots of joint pain, and eventually stopped gym, but continued to play indoor soccer which I had picked up in my early 20's. I had begun a cycle of physio sessions and chiropractor visits to address the pain I felt. Eventually, I got back into fitness and moved into crossfit. This took an especially hard toll on my joints with the previous damage adding massive problems. After competing in the Crossfit 13 and 14 open's, I had to stop exercising. I spent the next 2 years fixing my body, I couldn't even do push ups without extreme pain following. When I felt better I tried my hand at EMS workouts (Like Body20), and returned to calisthenics. Eventually, I fixed myself well enough to train others in a boxing fitness gym. I took up running in place of soccer, developed my mind, completed my second degree in Sports Conditioning (waiting for the online company to finish it's marking) and sought to fix my body further. I ended up dedicating myself to calisthenics, and through that picked up Obstacle Course Racing as a real sport endeavour. Although I tend to run on injuries and compete on injuries, I am still an internationally qualified OCR athlete. This is in no small part due to managing fitness correctly, especially from an injured athlete perspective. And I base it all on various calisthenics workout regimes. With some functional and weighted training calisthenics at times.
Now I bring my knowledge and methods to the public in general. I can train any age, gender or athletic condition as I have been through it all, and experience beats all. I no longer train for size, but for strength and fitness however, i use Calisthenics to pick up weight when i need it for competition. Calisthenics and weighted calisthenics is a versatile training method and has been shown to increase testosterone in men when trained correctly, and beautifully sculpt women when used correctely.
